John 16:33

33 I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

I wonder what it was like sitting in a room with this man they called rabbi and friend. Hearing him talk about his death and how they will suffer because of him. It would have ran through my mind more then once, I would have said something like look dude if your father can do all things why doesn't he keep this from happening. Why doesn't he build us a nice big comfy church and people can come to us and we can sing some songs, do some miracles, pass the offering plate, hang out. After all you are God there should be some benefit to hanging out with you.
After telling them about death and suffering he goes in Verse 12 to say, he has more to say, more then they can bear. He is telling them how he is going to die and says he has more to say more then they can bear. At this point I think I would be flat out scared. Everytime Jesus tells them something scary, he also comforts them. He tells them straight up your life is gonna be hard but it is okay because I will be with you through the hardships. I will give you peace.
Thank you Jesus for your peace and for loving me through everything.

Too often when things get tough, panic sets in. Why? When verses like this were given to me so that troubling times don't get too much attention. When I'm focused on hard times(which is only natural) I'm missing out on something so special. That peace in Him!

Lord I pray that I learn to be better at keeping my focus on you ESPECIALLY in the hard times! That I settle into the peace that I find in you, and get really, really comfortable! Not a lazy comfortable, but very much an "active" comfortable! That I do a better job at remembering that no matter what troubles me, you have overcome it!

Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt[a] in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

I was once in the world and the Spirit came and convicted me> There is no greater witness today than the Holy Spirit and it is awesome that that He can work His witness through me today. We have a first hand witness of God's work from Adam to Jesus; He was there at every event from origanal sin to the final sacrifice for sin and the Spirit can tell me of those events through the Bible like I can tell you first hand what I did in my life. Without the Holy Spirit the Bible is just the Good Book; with the Holy Spirit the Good Book is a first hand historical document.
13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.

We should plaster this verse everywhere! The fridge, the bathroom mirror, our desk at work, on T-shirts, bookmarks, school book covers, bumperstickers........

How much plainer do we have to have it?? Jesus gave us the answer to the biggest "test" of all. Here is the "test" - Your life will not be easy-you will have trouble, big and small. Some of them will be so small and insignificant that we may not even recognize them as trouble. Some of them will bring you flat on your face and you will lose "everything." I love this part!! BUT!! He said BUT!! I love that! BUT, take heart!! I have ovecome the world! How totally awesome is that???? We can rest assured that even though it seems we won't live through one more moment of trouble, Jesus is there with peace and comfort! Waiting for us to turn around, look Him square in the face and say, "Oh yes, you have ovecome this, too. I give it to you!"

Thank you for the BUTs. Thank you for peace that surpasses all understanding! Thank you that you mean what you say and the you say what you mean! HALLELUJAH!
