13:25-28 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?" Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this peice of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him, but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.
How in the world could they have not gotten that? At first I read that and think man, he sure didn't pick these guys for their SAT scores! But then I start thinking how amazing it is that if it's not part of His plan for us to know something yet, we just don't! (If I would have REALLY heard this when I was in school I would have used it for sure on the things I didn't get!)
"No Mrs. Hannigan, God hasn't opened my mind up to comprehend this yet; but I'll be all over it when He does mam!" Probably wouldn't have gone well.
I think if they would have really heard what He told them they probably would have seized Judas immediately and not allowed Him to betray Jesus. And that obviously would have been a kink in what HAD TO HAPPEN! I think more than anything these verses help me to feel that as long as I continue to follow Him, I'll know what I need to know when He needs me to know it!
13:37-38 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!"
I think about myself and if I was in that room and I tried to stick out my chest and claim that no way was I going to let Him go without me, what would He say? I mean I would really mean it, but I'm sure Peter did too! Would he look inside me and find more betrayal ahead, I pray that He wouldn't! Would He look inside me and say, "Yeah, you're with me, you've already had your several hundred roosters!"
Heavenly Father I pray that I'm all out of roosters! But if I'm not please allow me to wholeheartedly say that I'm so so sorry before hand, because you already know they're coming! And wether it be from the past or what lay ahead, thank you for your many, many lessons; and how they always seem to point me back to you!
I'm about to hit my pillow like a Clay Aikan CD hits the clearance rack, Jeremy
13:16 - I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
Doesn't get much simpler than that! We are all equal. In God's eyes we are all the same. Just because you're a boss doesn't make you better than the worker; just because you're the man doesn't make you better than the woman; just because you're the oldest child doesn't make you better than the younger child; just because you're the teacher doesn't make you better than the student. Jesus said it and that's it. No room for questions, yet we don't act that way. We treat people wrong because they are different. We treat people wrong because we think we are better. Just because we have more money, a bigger house, a better job, better kids, better education. None of that actually matters to God and it shouldn't matter to us! The ground at the foot of the cross is level!
13:34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
If don't behave in the way Jesus tells us to in verse 16, then we cannot obey His command in verse 34-35. No one will believe in our Jesus if we treat others differently and pick those whom we love. Verse 16 is a promise, you will be blessed if you do them. Wonder what kind of blessing I am missing because I treat people less than??
God help me to live by your commands! Help me to treat everyone equally and to love everyone the same. I confess right here that this will be very HARD! There are those who can be quite unloveable! Help me to see everyone through your eyes! I know I want to be loved unconditionally so help me to love the same way!
